An Environmentalist Auto Club?

Through a link from The Nation, I found the web site of an auto club not named AAA: the Better World Club, which provides the same 50-state towing service that people associate with the American Automobile Association.

The cool thing about it that it provides AAA services without funding pro-car lobbying in Washington; you don't have to worry about selling out your environmental principles just for the sake of getting a tow in backroads South Carolina. Tom Magliozzi plugged the group on NPR's Car Talk: "I had no idea," he said, "that part of our AAA dues were being spent on lobbyists who oppose just about everything having to do with public transportation. If AAA thinks that it's a good idea for every single person to get to work in 3,000 pounds of iron, we sure don't want to help support such a silly idea."

Neither do I. My AAA membership comes up for renewal this month, but I feel pretty confident that I'll be sending my money to these guys instead.
