Somebody Missed the Memo

This morning, the Georgia Department of Revenue posted a list of longtime tax deadbeats at its website. I glanced through it for a moment tonight, but as I read, I came across an oddity. Take a look for yourselves.

state individual deadbeat list excerpt; credit - Ga. Dept. of Revenue

If you follow pop culture, you probably know the name Lisa Lopes as the offstage handle of Left Eye, a member of TLC. She comes from here, and had a pad in DeKalb County — which, sure enough, matches up with the location listed by her name on the Department of Revenue website.

So let's recap: she's rich, she's famous. and the state has an address where it can try to track her down. So what's the holdup?

I dunno; call me nutty, but maybe she has trouble paying taxes because she died about two years ago.

If this tells us much about the state of Georgia's record keeping, we ought to quit hoping to get that deadbeat money back.

Wouldn't her heirs be responsible for repaying the tax?

Joe:
What heirs? I think I recall her dying unmarried and childless.

Posted by: Greg Greene at February 10, 2004 9:14 AM

Not heirs -- "estate." The people who got custody of the money.

Posted by: McGehee at February 10, 2004 10:58 AM

Yeah, her estate is still responsible for paying the tax liability incurred while she was still alive.
